Q&A PrêtàPregnant.com talks with: Gala Serré
In November gorgeous Gala and her boyfriend will welcome their first baby, a little boy! On her personal blog www.mybikinimusthaves.com focused on swimwear and sunny places she shares the prettiest pics of her blossoming baby bump. Today we talk with her about her career, maternity style and beauty secrets.
How would you describe your own personal style?
I don’t wear one particular fashion style but I love to mix high street labels like Zara and All Saints with designer accessories from Dolce & Gabbana or Celine. One day I will wear casual jeans and sneakers and the other day an elegant dress with high heels. Apart from clothing I spend much time on my hair. Since it’s so much and such a recognizable part of appearance I’m willing to spend quite some money on hair products.
If the opportunity of a lifetime presents itself but there’s no way you can balance this with being a fulltime mom, what would you do? Dream job or family?
Although I’m not a mom yet, I will place my family above everything. Especially when the baby is still so young and you’re adapting to the new family life I think it’s important to spend a lot of time together. However, I’m not the type to sit still or completely stop working so I will try to find a good balance between my family life and business.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Oh my god! Chocolate! I’ve always been a chocolate fan but since I’m pregnant I can’t stop eating it. I can eat the whole caramel sea salt bar from Tony Chocolonely in once, no joke!
Which fashion mom (to-be) you look at for inspiration?
I really love the style of Sai Da Silva, mom & founder of blog Scoutthecity.com and Instagram account @scoutfashion. She can pull of a lot of different looks, which I love and it’s interesting to see her combining work with her family.
What is the best part about being pregnant?
I think the best part of being pregnant is feeling the baby move inside of me and realizing I’m creating new life. As the pregnancy progresses it’s really interesting to see the bond that you create with your baby. So I feel like when I’ll meet him for the first time I already know this little guy!
What is your pregnancy craving?
I can honestly say that I don’t have any specific pregnancy cravings. But I’ve noticed that since I’m pregnant I care a lot more about animals. It’s so funny. Not that I hated animals before, but now when I see a little puppy on the streets it really melts my heart!
Could you describe your favorite maternity look of this season?
Summer is officially over but I love to wear summer clothing as long as possible! I think it has something to do with my work 😉 This summer I’ve traveled a lot to sunny places so I was basically wearing a bikini every day. My favorite beach look consist of a triangle style bikini, a comfortable but stylish Pitusa maxi dress, big sunglasses and a stylish Sensi Studio beach bag.
For this fall I will wear denim -maternity- jeans (I love the ones from Queen mum and H&M) with biker boots and an oversized sweater to fit my belly. Complete it with a leather jacket and I’m ready to go!
What inspires you most in life and where do you find creativity?
Every now and then I tend to lose my inspiration and creativity and then I know it’s time to disconnect from my familiar surroundings and recharge myself. The best way for me to do this is to book a short city trip and immerse in another culture and meet new people. What also works for me at these moments is to take a step back and realize what I’ve accomplished so far. Or to step out of my comfort zone and do something that I normally won’t do. This will immediately boost my confidence and motivation!
Are there any fun (childhood) traditions that you want to share with your kids?
I’m a Christmas baby, born on December 25th so I always celebrate my actual birthday with my immediate family. We come together at my mothers place and everyone brings homemade food. The evening starts with opening presents and listening to the music of Juan Luis Guerra and it always ends with us playing Rummikub at the big table haha. Every single year on my birthday I love to go through my baby book and look at all the pictures of when my mom was pregnant with me and I was still a little baby. I hope I can keep this tradition when my kids are older. So I’m already working on that baby book 😉
What’s currently on your reading list? Favorite book(s) of all time?
Apart from all the maternity and mommy books that I’ve received from friends and family (I honestly think I have 10 different ones!), I love to read books that inspire me or could help me with my business. So at the moment I’m reading Power Vrouwen by Julia Pimsleur. But my all time favourite book must be Island beneath the sea from Isabel Allende.
What keeps you relaxed in stressful times? Describe your ultimate Me-time moment.
I like going to the Spa, especially now that I’m pregnant. I love the Spa in the Conservatorium hotel! After a relaxing massage I feel reborn! Another thing that keeps my mind from stressful situations is to go to the gym. It might not sound very relaxing but I really can clear my head and block stressful thoughts during an hour workout. I’m taking it easy now but can’t wait to start again after the baby is here.
How do you stay healthy (during pregnancy)? Are there any beauty and lifestyle tips you would like to share?
I tried to stay active as long as possible during my pregnancy (fitness, boxing, cycling) but at this stage I only do pregnancy yoga. On the beauty part I actually wear less make-up and hair products than before, so strange! I think I’m really counting on Mother Nature and that so-called pregnancy glow lol. I also agreed with myself that as long as I drink more than enough water and eat fruit and vegetables every day, I’m allowed to eat whatever I want (see my previous answer about chocolate ;))
Is there anything you love to wear but your partner simply hates? And the other way around, is there anything in your partners wardrobe you would love to see mysteriously disappear?
My boyfriend is not really a big fan of my espadrilles. It’s just not his style and he prefers to see me in heels or boots. I don’t really have a particular item from his closet that I dislike. Or maybe it doesn’t bother me that much. But once a year I clean out both of our closets and throw away each item that he hasn’t worn for a year. Luckily he always agrees with me so far!
What is your favorite holiday destination?
My roots are in Aruba and my boyfriend is from Curacao so we always make sure we visit the Caribbean at least once a year. But apart from that I love going to New York, that city never disappoints! Italy is also one of my favorites because it has so many beautiful places to offer. You can indulge yourself in food, culture, beach lifestyle and, of course, fashion!
A decade ago would you have pictured your life as it is now?
When it comes to starting a family, yes, I always hoped that I could become a mother before I was thirty. Not that I insisted on a tight schedule, but it just happened to turn out like this. In terms of career I always knew that I wanted to start my own business but had no clue in what or when. So no, back then I couldn’t predict that today I would be working in the swimwear industry and talk about my passion everyday!
Can you name 10 things (in no particular order) you couldn’t live without?
My personal note book
Lip balm (I hate dry lips!)
My friends and (future) family!
My bike (must have when you live in Amsterdam!)
To-do list (I love planning and structure in my work)
Which mom (to-be) would you like to introduce for the next The-Mom.com talks with and why?
I would like to introduce mommy-to-be and fellow curly girl Perla! She’s one half of fashion bloggers duo Frida and Monroe and also expecting her first baby. Our expected due dates are only 5 days apart! I love how she styles her bump in an easy but fashionable way.
